  With our lives still restricted¹ by Covid-19, my birding with Paul has been really limited.

 

For the past couple of months, our birding has meant² meeting outside his apartment building and walking – fully masked and properly³ distanced – to a park nearby.

 

　Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice park! With lot’s of good birds seen there (we think a Goshawk⁴ is nesting there this year). But we have wanted a change of scenery lately.

 

　Last Monday Paul suggested a trip to the river in front of my house.

 

He came down about 11:00, and we walked down to the river hoping to see the Long-billed Ringed Plovers (イカルチドリ that were nesting there, and maybe our first look this year at the Chestnut-cheeked Sarlings (コムクドリ) (but we didn’t see them.)

 

We parked our old butts⁵ on a rock and spent the morning with⁶ the river, a surprising number of⁷ birds, and some good, old guy conversation (the number one topic of conversation these days seems to be trouble with our bodies).

 

We saw this Japanese Wagtail enjoying the water (セグロセキレイ)

 

 

A Tattler looking for something to eat (キアシシギ)

 

 

A kingfisher looking very kingly⁸ (カワセミ)

 

 

 

This Common Sandpiper got lucky⁹! (イソシギ)

 

 

And this Little-ringed Plover looking very cute! (コチドリ)

 

 

  We did see the Long-billed Ringed Plover, our main objective¹⁰, but it was just too far away for my camera…

 

We had a lovely couple of hours.
