A Drive to the Apple Orchard1
This weekend, we made a trip to Uwanuma, Tome to pick apples. As you probably know, this is our annual event. We started when our kid was still a kid, hoping2 that this would be a fun experiece to remember. Now, as a matter of course3, our kid grew up and only the parents go and get apples. It, however, is still fun to get out of the house and up into the orchard.
On the way, there is a very charming4 bridge. Every year I wanted to take a photo of this bridge, but I always forgot until we were already on it and there was no way to stop. This year, again, I suddenly remembered when I was on the bridge in our car, but since I was the driver (so I didn’t have to hesitate to5 ask the driver to make a U-turn!), I got permission6 from my passengers, drove back, parked the car, ran to the spot, and took some photos.
Isn’t this cute? Since this area is famous for the lake called Izunuma, where a lot of swans come and stay over the winter, even the bridge has a swan motif. They are sticking their necks up7 in the sky. When we drive through here at a certain speed, from both sides, one after another, swans pop up8. It is really some9 experience!
Before the bridge, there is a fence on the side walk10 and swans are flying there, too. Again, it’s fun to drive along this road. There is a lot of swan activity and sometimes even real swans!
Until this time I didn’t know it, but there is ANOTHER swan motif on the bridge. It was so much fun to make one more discovery, walking on the bridge — an art-deco swan against the wide river and the vast sky.
Next year, if I can remember, I’ll show you the apple orchard!

４ いつも日本語で英語の持つニュアンスを出すのに困る言葉です。辞書では「すてきな」「可愛らしい」「うっとりするほど魅力的な」「感じがよい」「愛嬌がある」etc. と出てくるのですが、もっと「温もり！」をブレンドしたいんです。ちょっと私の日本語力では…Somebody, help me! (^-^;)
たとえば、結構年齢を重ねたお婆さんにも、She is a very charming lady. などと使います！

りんご園までドライブ
この週末、登米市の上沼というところまで、りんご狩りに行ってきました。恐らくもうご存じでしょうが（毎年ブログに載せているので）、これは私たちの恒例行事。子どもがまだ“子ども”だった頃に、楽しい体験になるようにと思って始めたのですが、今では当然ながらその子どもも大きくなって、親だけが行ってりんごを採ってくるようになりました。それでも、家を出て丘の上にあるりんご園目指すのは楽しいイベントです。
途中に、とても可愛らしい心惹かれる橋があるんです。毎年この橋の写真を撮りたい思っていたのですが、いつも、橋に差しかかって後続の車もあって止まれない状況になったところで思い出す…の繰り返し。今年も案の定、車で橋の上を通るときにはっと思い出しました。でも、今回は私がドライバー（遠慮しながら戻ってくださいとお願いしなくてもよし！）。乗客の許可を取り、橋まで戻り、車を止めて、走って行って、何枚か写真を撮って来ました。
可愛いでしょ？この辺りは伊豆沼—多くの白鳥がやって来て冬を越すところ—で有名なので、橋にまで白鳥のモチーフが使われています。空にのびのびと首を伸ばしている白鳥たち。ある程度のスピードで車を走らせると、両側から次々と白鳥がポンポン現れてくるんです。これが本当に楽しいんです！
この橋の手前の歩道のフェンスにも白鳥が飛んでいます。ここもまた、車で横を通ると絵が飛び出て来て楽しい場所。たくさん白鳥に囲まれていて、本物の白鳥も時々飛んで行る場所です！
そして、今回初めて気付いたのですが、橋にもう一つ白鳥のモチーフがありました。歩くことで、もう一つ楽しい発見が出来ました。—- 大きな川と空を背景にアールデコ調の白鳥。
来年は、もし忘れていなかったら、りんご園をお見せしたいと思います！
