For the first time in a long time1, I decided to feed the birds in my garden. This winter has been a long, cold one, and the birds always have a hard time finding2 food at this time of year. So I headed to3 the store for the ingredients4 of the best bird food there is: suet5. Real suet is made from the hard fat of cows and sheep mixed with peanut butter and corn meal and seeds and whatnot6, and I used to make it, but it’s a lot of work! So this time I’m making ‘Suet Lite7’, which is just lard and peanut butter. I heat both ingredients in the microwave and then mix it together. It looks and smells just like peanut butter!
The birds just love it!
It has been so much fun to watch the birds flocking8 to the feeders9. Of course here at the house I get mostly Sparrows, but also every day there are White-eye, Japanese Tits and the ubiquitous10 Bulbuls.
And my best visitor? Pale Thrush came every day for a couple of weeks.

鳥の餌やり（by ウィル）
しばらくぶりに庭で鳥に餌をあげることにしました。今年は冬が長くて寒い。鳥にとって、一年のこの時期はいつも餌を探すのが大変な時。だから、僕はsuetと呼ばれる鳥にとって最適な食べ物の材料を調達しにスーパーに行ってきました。本物のsuetとは、牛や羊の硬い脂肪分にピーナツバターやとうもろこしの粉や種子類やその他いろんなものを混ぜて作ります。僕もかつてはそうやって作っていましたが、大変な作業だったので（Rie そうなんです。私が肉屋に電話をして取り置きをお願いして二人で買いに行ったりしていました）、今回は 低カロリーsuetを作っています。ただラードとピーナツバターで。この２つの材料をレンジで温めて、混ぜるだけ。見た目も匂いも単なるピーナツバターという感じです。
ま～、鳥たちはコレが大のお気に入り！
庭の餌台に鳥が集まってくるのを楽しく観察していました。もちろん、自宅に食べに来るのはスズメがほとんど。でも、ほぼ毎日メジロやシジュウカラ、どこにでもいるヒヨドリもやって来ます。今までで一番のお客さん？２週間ほど毎日やって来てくれたシロハラです。
