Halloween 2013

With these Jack-o-lanterns, our house is well guarded! Even our neighbor made 6 of them and put them outside, so the whole neighborhood is protected from the dead1 — they can’t attack us, the living2. ( My friend whom I sent these photos to said that she would show these photos when zombis come, saying "Can’t you see these?" )
On Halloween it is believed that the world of the living and the world of the dead overlap. People dress up in ghosty costumes trying to disguise3 themselves and trick the dead into leaving4 them alone. Recently Will is really following this belief and carves the pumpkins really scary. (So the other one is made to balance the level of scariness. )
In the daytime, the Jack-o’-lanterns are a bit softer.
 
To tell the truth, this year before we carved the pumpkins, one of them was stolen along with 3 small gourds —it was a perfect set to decorate one house. That was heartbreaking, especially for Will who took care of them for the last 4 months. However, when people stopped by5 and admired6 our pumpkins, it really helped us to forget what happened to the missing ones. ( I wonder if the other pumpkin got carved and fulfilled7 his Halloween destiny8 at another person’s house? )
When I came home from an outside class, a little student of Will’s ran out of the door and scared me to death! She was so happy that her surprise really worked. She kept giggling9, looking at me while I was trying to catch my breath10. You would be surprised if suddenly this little monster jumped out at you, wouldn’t you?
Well, my mom also pitched in11 for this event. The day before, she delivered some fun food to us. Of course, it was for our kid who is sort of grown-up now, but all the family enjoyed it. The next day, getting the idea from this, I made the same face for my little one’s lunch.

ハロウィーン ２０１３
ジャジャーン!!
これらのジャコランタンがあれば、私たちの家はもう安全！お隣さんは６つほど作り、外に置いてあるので、この辺一帯、人間を襲いに来る死人はよりつかないでしょう。（これらの写真を送ってあげた友人は、もしゾンビが来たらこれを見せて「これが目に入らぬか！」と言ってやると話してました。）
ハロウィーンの日には、生きている人の世界と死んだ人の世界が重なると言われています。人間は変装してお化けのような格好をし、死人が同類だと思い自分たちに悪さをしないように仕向けます。最近、ウィルはその信条に従って、とても怖～くカボチャを彫ります。（だから、怖さのバランスを取るのに怖くないのも作ります。）
明るい日の下では、もう少し優しく見えます。（？）
実を言うと、今年カボチャを彫る前に一つ盗まれてしまいました。それも他の小さなオモチャカボチャ３つと一緒に。家一つを飾るには申し分ないセット。とってもがっがりしました。４ヶ月も手塩に掛けて育ててきたウィルは特に。でも、人々が立ち止まって、カボチャいいねぇ～と言ってくれると、無くなったカボチャがどうなったかと思う気持ちをちょっと忘れることが出来ました。（でも、どうなったかなぁ？その家でも、ちゃんと彫ってもらって、ハロウィーンに日の目を見たのかしら？）
私が外の仕事から帰って来たら、ウィルの方に習いに来ている子がいきなりドアから飛び出してきて、私を驚かしました。私があまりに驚いたものだから、その子はうまくいったと大喜び。息をハアハアさせている私を見て、ケラケラと笑い続けていました。誰だって、突然こんな格好をした得体の知れない人が出てきたら飛び上がる、でしょ？
私の母も、このイベントに一役買ってくれました。前日に楽しそうな食べ物を運んで来てくれました。もちろん、孫のために（もう大きくなっていますが）と持ってきてくれたのですが、家族みんなで美味しく頂きました。次の日、このアイディアを頂いて、子どものお弁当には同じ顔が。
