Minomushi, a Bagworm
In Japanese, it is explained as a bug in ancient rain gear1 — a poncho made of straw2. In English, they are in a bag, huh? (^-^)
The other day I came home and parked my bike, and there I spotted a tiny creature, resting on a leaf of the hedge3 right in front of me. Ta da!
So tiny and so cute! I almost wanted to see the guy who lives inside, but of course I left him alone just imagining who lives in there and what he is doing in there.( I don’t know if it was a he or a she, but I "just" feel like calling him a "he".)
After I saw him, I got really curious4 and quickly checked with my iPhone to get to know5 about "him". It was very interesting!
I learned the larva6 of a moth, Minoga, lives inside.(I don’t really like moths, but if I like bagworms, I should try to like them when they grow up, too.)
Male bagworms hatch7 and come out to be moths. However, female bagworms stay in the larva stage, and have no feathers and no legs (What???), and spend all their lives in the bag.(Oh, they can’t see the sky?)
Well, amazing….
and a sad thing is the number of them is getting smaller since a kind of fly which eat bagworms landed here from the continent8. Too bad!
It says bagsworms like plants of the rose family such as roses(of course!) apples, cherries, strawberries, etc. Isn’t this also amazing? All these different plants belong to the rose family!
Anyway, if you want to meet bagworms in your neighborhood, why don’t you go check around the roses growing nearby?

３ アメリカのアニメ映画"Over the Hedge"のhedgeです。邦題は「森のリトル・ギャング」でしたね！人間の食べるスナック菓子を見つけ、その袋をパフーっとして美味しい匂いに浸る動物の表情が何とも可愛らしく、忘れられない場面です。
５ knowだけでは「知っている」という状態動詞です。知らない→知るへの変化を説明するには、get to で移り変わる感じを付けなければいけません。

みのむし
日本語では藁で作られた昔の雨具に入った虫と説明されるけど、英語では袋に入った虫と説明されるんですね。(^-^)
先日、帰宅して自転車を止めた時、目の前の生垣の葉っぱにたたずむちっちゃな生き物に目が止まりました。
ホントちっちゃくて可愛い！中に誰が住んでいるのか見てみたくなりました。が、もちろんそっとしておきました。どんなのが住んでいて、何をしているんだか想像するだけにして。（heって呼んでいますが、heかsheかも分からずただ何かheって感じがするだけのことです。）
ミノムシを見たあと、気になって、“あの子"のことを知るためにiPhoneで調べてみました。そしたら、興味深いこと！
まず、ミノガという蛾の幼虫が中に住んでいるということを知りました。（蛾はちょっと苦手なのですが、ミノムシが好きということは、大人になった蛾の姿の彼らも好きになってあげなきゃいけないということか…）
オスのミノムシは孵化して蛾となり、外界に出てくるけど、メスのミノムシは幼虫のままで羽も脚も生えず（はっ？）、あの中で一生を過ごすんだそうです。（空を見れないの？）
びっくりです…
そして、悲しいことに、ミノムシを食べてしまうハエが大陸から渡って来て、ミノムシの数は減っているのだとか。可哀想に！
ミノムシは、バラ科の植物が好きだそうです。バラ科というのは、バラはもちろん、サクラ、イチゴなども含まれると知って、これまたビックリ！これだけ種類の異なっているものがバラ科とは。
近所のミノムシに会いたくなったら、近くに咲いているバラの周辺をチェックしてみてはいかが？
