Coming home to Seattle 2
Today I’m going to talk about animlas here.
On Whidbey Island, we can see many animals. From our living room, we saw a deer, maybe 50 meters away from us. While we were driving on the highway, we saw sheep, lamas, ponies, horses, and cows. I even saw baby cows about one-third of the size of the adult cows. …and on a little farm which we often pass by1 near our house, there were cows enjoying the spring sunlight on the green grass. When there are many, about 10 to 15 are out.
They are not always out, so we feel lucky when we can meet them. Since their hair is a bit curly and so unregular, we’ve been calling them "shaggy2 cows" since our kid was tiny. This farm is right after the corner of the road, we used to say as we were approaching the corner, "Are the shaggy cows are out too-daay?" and after the corner, we went "Yeay!" or "Oh, no." That kid has grown up now, and only Papa and Mama still do it because it was long imprinted3 in our routine4. (^-^;)
And ・・・, tonight’s highligh was this!
A raccoon!
The dog in the house suddenly got excited and at that moment we knew what it meant. There he is, visiting our compost5 can for his feast6. Not just one but two came! He looked at the camera but his paws7 were still in the can. He was NOT scared at all. First, I said "He’s cute!", but somewhere in my heart resisted that notion slightly when I saw him having the nerve8 to look me in the eye9…

シアトルへの里帰り ２
今日はここで出会う動物について書きます。
ウィッビー・アイランドでは、たくさんの動物を見ることが出来るんです。リビングルームからは遠く（？）５０メートルぐらい離れたあたりに鹿を見ました。ハイウェイを走っているときには、羊やラマ、ポニー、馬、牛も見ました。その中には大人の牛の３分の１ぐらいの子牛たちもいました。・・・そして、家の近くのよく通る小さな囲いの中には、緑の芝の上で春の日差しを楽しむ牛たちが。多いときは１０頭から１５頭ぐらいが出ています。
いつも出されている訳ではないので、お目にかかれたらラッキー。この牛たち、ちょっと巻き毛で毛並みがあっち向いたりこっち向いたりしているので、子どもがまだ小さかったときからずっと「ボサボサの牛」と呼んでいました。この牧場はちょうど道を曲がったところにあるので、曲がり角に差しかかると、「今日はボサボサの牛いるかな～？」と言って、その後角を曲がると「いた～！」とか「残念！」と声を張り上げて、小さかった子どもとよく楽しんだものでした。その子どもは今や大きくなり、パパとママだけが長年しみついてしまったこの儀式をいまだにやってしまうのです。(^-^;)

アライグマ！
家の犬が突然興奮し始まったので、すぐに何のことか分かりました。いました！ご馳走を求めて、堆肥用の生ゴミの缶にやって来たアライグマ。それも一匹ではなく２匹来ました。カメラ目線、でも手はしっかり食べ物から離さない。なかなか肝の据わった大物でした。初めは「可愛い！」と言ったものの、そこまで大胆に行動されると可愛いというのも微妙な感じ・・・
