◆Speaking of Cutting Trees

Speaking of1 Cutting Trees

In the last blog, I talked about our tree cutting project, but this time I’ll show you an interesting tree cutting story! It is about trees at the house in Seattle — to be correct2, on Whidbey Island.

We knew that there were several trees next to the house that could hit the house sometime in the future3. A few years ago, we cut one down by ourselves, but it’s so dangerous (as you sometimes see in funny4 videos on TV) for normal people to cut trees down unless5 there’s nothing near the tree.

This spring, we decided to have professionals come to cut the trees down, but on that day, even though the trees were quite tall, just one little guy showed up and chop, chop, chop so easily, and it was done. Will was there when the the tree guy came. Here’s what Will saw:

The guy climbed up to the top of a tree, cutting down brunches6 as he went up. (Yes! He is up there!)

Then, he held himself stable7 on the tree, and with his chain saw, cut the trunk8 about 2 meters from the top, and dropped it down. (Wow! Is this how you cut trees?)

He repeated this many times as he came down.

By this method, people don’t have to worry about in which direction the whole tree might fall. Very smart and very effective!

Don’t you think people have a fixed idea9 about cutting a tall tree down? Everybody thinks you cut at the bottom of the tree and when it starts to fall, you stop cutting and move away and let the tree come down. I never ever10 knew that there is a different way to cut down trees. I don’t know when I’ll ever use this method, but it might come in handy11 SOME DAY if I have to cut down a big tree that’s close to a house!
