The First Crop of the Season
"Do you want to see something special?"
This morning, while I was making my lunch to bring to work, Will came into the kitchen with his hands closed with this question. The next moment, when he opened his hands, there in his BIG hands were 2 LITTLE very CUTE shiny red cherry tomatoes !
( This contrast reminded me of my mom’s word when our kid was a new born baby. "Wow, when Will-san holds her, She looks even tinier." )
Anyway, these were like gems from our garden!
The young tomato plants are not expensive nor special. After getting them, what grows them is purely your care.
Will prepares the soil, buys them, and plants them, and raises them with a special fertilizer — Will’s care and affection￥(^-^)￥ !!
Since we moved into this house, Will has been planting tomatoes every summer. He researches how to grow them successfully on the Internet and tries new tactics every year. This year, of course, he is experiencing a new magic ( ・・・but I’m not supposed to tell. m(-0-;)m )
Thanks to his continuous effort, we can always enjoy tomatoes in summer which are fresh from our garden. Not only that, we don’t have to buy cherry tomatoes for the next 2 and a half months. That helps our home budget, too !
Oh, and I can’t forget this ! Our tomatoes serve as a green curtain for Will’s teaching room. Three tomato plants make a shade big enough for one room.
According to Will’s garden dairy, 3 years ago, he planted on April 28th, and we got 1,701 tomatoes. I wonder how many we can get this year.

シーズン最初の収穫
「とくべつ～なもの見たい？」
今朝、私が仕事に持っていくためのお弁当を作っていたとき、ウィルがこう言いながら、両手を丸く閉じてキッチンに入って来ました。ウィルがその手を開いた次の瞬間、そこにはウィルのお～きな手の中に、ちっちゃくてとてもカワイイピカピカに光っているチェリートマトが二つ！
（この対比。前にもこんなことが・・・と思ったら、うちの子がまだ生まれたてのころに言った母の言葉につながりました。「あら～、ウィルさんが抱っこすると、赤ちゃんがさらにちっちゃく見えちゃうわ～。」）
それはおいといて、このトマト、まるで庭の宝石のよう！
トマトの苗は高くないし、普通にどこでも売っているものです。ただ買ったあと、どう育ってくれるかは単純に手の掛け方しだい。
ウィルは、土を準備し、苗を買ってきて、それらを植え、特別な肥料 — 手間と愛情￥(^-^)￥ — を与えて育てます！
この家に引っ越してきてから、毎年夏にウィルはトマトを植えています。インターネットでどうやったらうまく育てられるかを調べて、毎年何か新しい方法を試します。もちろん、今年も新しい魔法を実験中。（・・・でも、これはお伝え出来ません。m(-0-;)m ）
ウィルのたゆまぬ努力のお陰で、夏はいつも庭から採りたてのトマトを堪能しています。それだけではなく、約２カ月半チェリートマトをお店から買ってくる必要がありません。家計もとても助かります！
あ、そして忘れてはいけないのが、このトマトはウィルの教室のグリーンカーテンをして活躍してくれます。一部屋分の日陰を作るには、３つのトマトの苗で十分。
ウィルのガーデニング日記によると、３年前は４月２８日に苗を植え、1701個のトマトを収穫しました。今年はいくつ取れるかな～？（どれだけの収穫(yield)があるかな～のということもできますよ。）
ウィルの教室の隅っこには、トマトを数えるカウンターがおいてあります。今日、今年の数を数え始めました。カチッ、カチッ、今日の収穫２個分！
