◆Winter Birds

Winter Birds
(written by Will)

This is a great time for birding. We just finished the wader migration1, which happens in the fall, and now it’s time for the winter birds to come to Sendai.

The ducks and swans start coming in2 now (we saw the first swans at Onuma a couple of3 weeks ago), with the Teal, Pintail and many others arriving for their winter stay.

Many winter birds seem to show up in ones and twos4, gradually increasing their numbers, but there’s one that seems to arrive all at once:

The Darian Redstart. These cute birds (this is a female — the male is of course much more colorful) just seem to appear magically. It was last Wednesday that they were everywhere, giving their cute piping5 calls and click click clicks, that make them so easy to find.

You won’t see them downtown, but if you look carefully near the river or any park with bushes, and even the low hills like Dainenji-yama and Aoba-yama, you’ll see them.

They are not winter visitors — they, Spot-billed Duck are here year round6, but since I got a nice shot of him, I’ll put it at the end.
