Swan Report from Hirose River 3
Well, even though it’s been a long cold winter, swans know that spring is on its way1. The number of swans on the Hirose River is getting smaller2 now. The light which reflects on the surface of the river is getting brighter, too.
Now, even the color of the water is different from3 the coldest time of winter. When I took our dog for a walk4 the other day, I saw three ducks hanging out5 so peacefully in the little corner of the river. The water was so clear that I was able to see their orange small feet kicking slowly under the water. I had such a nice and peaceful morning walk.
In the soft morning light, these three swans(below) started doz6ing. It was quite a contortion7! Their bodies were facing "that way" but their necks curled up and were facing "this way." They were like this for a while, sometimes opening their eyes and sometimes closing their eyes. Especially the left two, since they are still half gray, when they close their eyes, the white rings around their eyes show up, which is really cute.
Since more than half of the swans are gone, they must know that it’s about time to head for8 the breeding grounds. I bet9 they must have been thinking "Just 5 more days, just 5 more days" while they were dozing just like I do "Just 5 more minutes, just 5 more minutes" before getting up in the morning.
Probably it’s going to be the last report from the Hirose River this winter. I want to put this photo up on this page. This is the photo which I took after the river was frozen in mid February. Some parts of the ice started melting and the mozaic art of the ice was so pretty that I stopped my bike and took this photo. Quite a big part of the river, which was about 3 times as big as this photo10, had this pattern. That reminded me of the plastic sheet for a notebook which my big sister used to use. You know that celluloid made product.
The Hirose River brought all kinds of fun even in the cold season.
It’s going to be interesting to see how many swans will visit the Hirose River next year.

広瀬川白鳥リポート 3
さて、長くて寒い冬がつづきましたが、白鳥たちは春がやって来ているのを知っています。広瀬川の白鳥の数も減ってきています。川面に反射する光も明るくなってきました。
川の水の色も一番寒かったころとは違っています。先日、犬の散歩に出かけたとき、３羽のアヒルが川の一角でのんびりと泳いでいるのを見ました。川の水が透き通っていたので、水の中で３羽のオレンジ色の足がゆったりと水を搔いているのが見えました。落ち着いたとても気持ちのよい朝の散歩をしました。
朝の柔らかな光の中、３羽の白鳥(下の写真)はうとうとと眠り始めました。すごい曲芸！体は「あっち」を向いているのに、首をクルッと巻いて「こっち」を向いています。時々目を開けたり閉じたりしながら、しばらくこの状態でした。特に、左の２羽はまだ半分灰色なので、目を閉じると、目の周りの白い輪っかが浮かびあがります。とても可愛い！
半分以上がもう飛び立っていったので、彼らもぼちぼち繁殖地へ飛び立つときだということを知っているでしょう。だから、本当はきっとこうやってうたた寝しているときも、「あと５日だけ、あと５日だけ」と思って寝ていたにちがいありません。私が朝起きる前に、「あと５分、あと５分」と思うように。
恐らく、これがこの冬最後の広瀬川のレポートになります。このページに、この写真を載せたいと思います。これは、２月の半ば川の水が凍ったあとに撮った写真です。氷の何ヶ所かが融け始め、氷のモザイクがあまりにキレイだったので、自転車を止めて写真に収めました。川のかなりの部分 — この写真の３倍ぐらいの部分— がこの模様で覆われていました。姉が昔使っていた下敷きを思い出しました。あのセルロイド製の。
広瀬川は、寒い季節でさえ色んな楽しみを運んでくれました。
来年は広瀬川に何羽の白鳥が訪れるか楽しみです。
