Necessity is the mother of invention!

The other day when we went to a food fair held in a park downtown, there were some high school students who had their own booths in one area. Some were selling some plants which they had grown. Some were selling some food products they had made.

However, there was a spot where no money or no products were being exchanged. Some people stopped and were listening quietly to high school students explaining something. So we decided to get close1 enough to hear.

What they were showing2 was this :

Do you have any idea what these are?

These are road panels, which could cover the surface of a walkway3.  Up to this point, it isn’t all that4 interesting, is it? However, listen to this !!! (+0+)/

Believe it or not, these are made from debris5 of the Great East Japan Earthquake.  As you know, the areas affected by the tsunami are now facing tons of  problems to be solved, and one of them is the huge amount of debris. Since it might be contaminated6 by radiation, how the debris is dealt with7 is controvertial8. Students in the Environmental Engineering course of Kurokawa High School came up with an idea for the use of them !

Originally, this project was started by the students in the former year, but after the earthquake, they couldn’t get materials to make the panels and left it unfinished9. Then, the present students were finally able to finish the project with debris from the earthquake.

They crush the debris, mix it with a special glue, and press it into a mold. They figured out how to recycle the debris by themselves. Amazingly enough,  you can use these panels as a source of heat in an emergency — by burning them. What a great idea! I was really impressed by their ingenuity10.

After all, human beings are "a thinking reed" as Pascal said.  Necessity is the mother of invention. I really admire these students and teachers for taking action11 to solve the problem in front of us.

That’s really cool !!  Way to go !
