◆A Stork Appears!

A Stork Appears!

Surprisingly, on the same day when people were talking excitedly on TV about the International Space Station successfully catching the Japanese cargo1 ship "Konotori", "White Stork", we were also talking excitedly about the stork that Will saw — on the same day! — for the first time in his life. What timing!

Now Will is going to explain his stork story.

My birding friend and I went out for a first birding of the new season this Monday. This is the start of the wader2 migration3 and we wanted to be out there4.

But a week or so ago, an Oriental Stork had been seen in the rice fields of Sendai, and though the information was several days old, we thought we’d give it a try5 on the way to the coast.

Here is what we saw:

He’s huge (they have a wingspan of 2.22 meters!) and a new bird for me.

Imagine how lucky we are that this bird chose to fly to Sendai! If you don’t know much about the stork situation in Japan, here’s some background information that I found on the Internet:

100 years ago, these storks were common in Japan (they are also found in Korea, China and Russia). Because of habitat loss, overhunting and too many chemicals in the rice fields they became virtually extinct. A captive6 breeding7 program was started in 1965, and they succeeded in breeding in 1989. They started to release the storks into the wild in Toyooka City in 2005 for a total of 27 storks by 2010, all of which were monitored by ground8 and satellite9 tracking10. The storks have been breeding successfully since 2007 in the wild. The population has been growing, reaching a total of 40 birds in 2010.

See! Here’s a close-up of the Radio tracking device attached to the stork as mentioned above11:

We went on to Gamou and saw 3 Tattlers and 4 Greenshanks – but they can’t compete with my first stork!
