◆Apple Picking(1)

Apple Picking(1)

What we do EVERY YEAR at this time is go to the apple orchard1 and enjoy apple picking. Don’t they look delicious?

We started going apple picking 7 years ago when one of Will’s students told us about the "apple tree owner" system. That is — we pay the farmer, and we get all the apples from one tree.

So far, 9 boxes of apples is the best harvest we’ve had. The average is maybe 7. ( Since we divide them with our friend’s family, 3 and a half boxes per family. ) This farmer tries to use less chemicals2, like insecticides3, and we feel really good about that. These apples are so good. Once you taste them, you can’t buy apples at the supermarket.

This year, however, they said the yield4 was not so good. Hail5 in the early summer hit some apples and some started rotting6. They are also smaller than usual because of the shortage of rain. AND because of the high fall temperatures, the apples were not completely ripe yet. The farmer explained all this to us, showing us some yellowish7 apples. In one or two weeks, they will be more redish7. Then, they will be really ready to harvest. But we had no choice and they are really good anyway.

They grow many different kinds of apples at that place, but our favorite is still Fuji. ( The farmer of the apple orchard is also Fujio-san! Yeah, we can tell why! (^-^)) We buy Fuji apples at the supermarket on Whidbey Island when we visit — They are world-famous! Everybody loves their crispness8, tartness9 and flavor.

We are an apple-eating family, so even these 4 boxes easily disappear before you can blink.

On the way back, which was about 4 o’clock, from our car windows, we saw a lot of letter "ku"s in the sky. There are lakes near there, so the swans and geese were coming back to sleep. That was SO COOL to see big くs and little くs flying here and there in the sky in the same direction. The sky was like a huge camvas. Really amazing !
