My Japan Week
This week, suddenly I had many chances to enjoy some Japanese culture.
Will and I visited my mom on Wednesday, which was a national holiday. When we entered the living room, what caught my eyes first was some pretty paper work which my mom had made and displayed on the table.
This is Kirie, paper-cutting artwork, and these are some traditional designs. All the lines are symmetrical1, so first you fold the paper and cut the paper and open it up2. Then, you enjoy the design suddenly popping up3 in front of you. Simple, but quite nice.
Then, today, one student brought some Ichigo Daifuku(Japanese sweets with a strawberry) that she made. Look! Mouthwatering4, aren’t they?
(To tell the truth5, we have a couple of students who are good at making sweets. They are like professionals! I want to say thank you so much for feed6ing us such great confectionery7.)
It was so funny that I received these Japanese sweets at that moment because another student prepared some explanation in English about Uguisu-mochi*, another kind of Japanese sweet. And after that, I had been craving for8 some Japanese sweets.(o^-^)o
***The Uguisu(bush-warbler)-mochi trivia***
This is what I learned from "that" student… Of course, I know that the confection’s pale9 green color is based on a bush-warbler. However, I’ve never seen this before, or I didn’t pay attention(to be correct), but it originally had a slightly pointy end on both sides to make it look like a bird. Did you know that? What I usually see is an oval10 shape, so next season , it’ll be fun to find the bird-shaped one.

私の“和”の一週間
今週は、予期せず和のものに触れる機会が多くありました。
まずは、ウィルと私は祝日だった水曜日に母を訪ねました。そのときリビングに入るとすぐ目に止まったのが、母が作ってテーブルに飾っていた素敵な紙細工。
こちらは切り絵で、ここにあるのは伝統的な型のいくつか。線対称の模様。つまり、まず紙を折り、それを切って、開くと、目の前に楽しいデザインが現れるという具合に作られてます。シンプルな中に良さありという感じでしょうか。
そして、今日、習いに来た方が手作りのいちご大福を持って来てくれました。見て！美味しそうでしょ？
（実を言うと、お菓子作りが上手な方が２～３名こちらにみえているんです。本当にっ！上手です！私たちに美味しいお菓子をご馳走してくださってとても感謝してます。）
それにしても、このタイミングで和菓子を頂くなんて。何故なら、別なクラスでちょうどウグイス餅について英語で説明を聞く機会があって、それ以来ずっと和菓子が食べたくて仕方なかったんです。(o^-^)o
***うぐいす餅のトリビア***
これが“その”生徒の方から学んだこと。うぐいす餅の淡い緑がうぐいすの色から来ているのは知っていましたが、今まで見たことがなかったためが、あるいは注意して見ていなかったためか・・・皆さんはご存知でしたか？もとはその鳥の姿に似せるべく両端の先が細くなって微妙にシュッと上を向いているって。私がいつも見ていたのは、楕円形のもの。来シーズンは、鳥のかたちをしたうぐいす餅を探してみようっと。
