◆New Variety?

New Variety?

Our Halloween pumkin, which we took out at the end of August, is still OK. It hasn’t gotten rotten1 yet. Maybe it can make it2 to Halloween! (Knock on wood3.)

Today, I’m going to talk about a pumkin, but it’s not about the same pumkin. Here it is!

You think it’s a regular pumkin? Actually, NO. It was a cross between a regular pumkin and a gourd4.

It came out of our pumkin patch5. Until we cut and ate it, we didn’t know what it was like. Of course, from its appearance, we thought it could be just like a regular Japanese pumkin. It had been sitting in our veggie6 box for a long time, and finally, this weekend, we decided to try.

When I cut it in half7, it was obvious8 it was not a regular Japanese pumkin. I wondered how I would prepare it. To enjoy "encountering9 something unknown", first I cut several ring-shaped pieces and cooked them just with salt and peper. Then, to avoid a dangerous encounter, I cut the rest10 into thin sticks and stirfried11 them with other veggies and a lot of herbs and spices.

It was not bad. I heard pumkins and gourds cross-pollinate easily, and that’s what this was — it was interesting that we could really taste both.

Next time, we might try to cross-pollinate an apple and a pen, or a pineapple and a pen! v(^0~)v
