◆Still Growing!

Still Growing!

  Our pumkins this year!
Number 1….

  and number 2

and we still have one more, a bit smaller than these. You can tell how big they are if you see my iphone next to them.

This year there was an accident at the very beginning. A little while after Will planted the seedlings1, somebody broke the stem2 of the one in the most important spot ( the sunniest spot ). According to Will, probably a crow3 stepped on4 it. Just as the stem was broken, I could tell Will’s heart was broken because it took a while to get that big after first planting the seeds in little pots. We almost gave up on5 the pumpkins this year.

However, using a little pumkin plant that we put aside6 after choosing the good ones for the best planting spots, Will tried again in a new place even though the timing was a little late. (Way to go, Will! )Since we didn’t have a lot of sun in early July, first we worried about its growth. Luckily, it really did grow at a nice pace after that.

Even af the end of August, they are still growing. Will measures the pumpkins from the top stem to the bottom belly button7 every morning. He said every day they are 2cm longer than the day before. Now it’s 78cm!

In the day time, they have T-shirts on (Will put his old tattered8 T-shirts on them) to prevent the skin from being hard9 by having the direct sun. The hardened skin can be cracked10, and that would mean that the pumpkins would start to rot11.

The unlucky start might turn out to be lucky! Even though we had a terrible beginning, maybe, maybe, we might have the biggest pumpkin we’ve ever had. We’ll see!

Our neighbor is growing some, too! The seeds are our Seattle souvenir to them every year.
