◆The Owl Project

The Owl Project(by Will)

Our(me and my bird friend) bird box maker is at it again!

Last weekend I put up 2 new boxes, and he’s made more.

This is not just for fun — it has real meaning. The small birds that nest in holes in trees have a hard time finding1 holes. Nest holes are at a premium2! Especially in woods near or in the city, old trees are viewed as dangerous, and are cut down. So, many small birds that depend on old dead and dying trees for their nesting sites have a hard time finding any.

Our nest boxes do a real service3!

This is one of his boxes I put up this year:

Recently, the box maker decided to branch out4 and make some owl boxes. We have Brown Hawk Owls (Aobazuku) in Sendai, nesting in the summer. So we all thought it would be a good idea to hang some boxes for them.

The Owl boxes are two sizes bigger than the small bird boxes and look like this:

The problem for us is, they should be hung5 5 meters or higher! How can we get them 5 meters up the tree?

When we were out there6, we looked for suitable7 trees for climbing, but just couldn’t find any (I’m a little glad since I’m afraid of heights8 and it looked like I was elected to do the climbing! ).

Then, later we thought we could use a ladder9. My neighbor said he would let us use one of his. The ladder is way too big to fit in my car, so next weekend you might be able to see two exhausted foreigners carrying10 a ladder up to the hills. If you do, please don’t laugh at us, just wave and say, ‘Good job, guys!’.
