◆Will’s Outing!

Will’s Outing1
(written by Will)

My friend Paul and I don’t get out as much as we used to. We’re both really busy, but last Monday we both had the whole day off and set out for2 a day of birding.

This is the wader3 migration4 season, and a really fun time for us birders. The waders have spent the summer in the north, and are now visiting Japan on their way to5 their southern winter homes. These little birds travel6 thousands of miles — and do it 2 times a year! Because they are here for such a short time, they are the favorites7 of many birders.

We had a great find8 at the first pond we checked, near the Engei Center. 5 Temmink’s Stints! We usually see just one or two in flocks9 of other birds…

We went on To Gamo, our regular birding spot. There we saw many species10 of migrants including this Curlew. Look at that bill11!

Finally we went to a site12 in Watari where there have been many birds this year. We had a great time there — lots of birds to enjoy.

Here is a Greenshank (so called because of its green legs)

And another interesting thing about this bird: It was banded by a friend of ours at Torinoumi! You can see the tags on its leg.

We had a great day. Many fun migrants, and a total of 60 birds altogether13. Not bad!
