My Saxophone Life
 

    

  It has been exactly 16 years at the end of this month since I started learning tenor sax. The first encounter¹ with the saxophone was when I went to a live performance by Sadao Watanabe when I was a high school student. I was fascinated² by him and wanted to learn this musical instrument³, but my dream to learn the sax didn’t come true… yet.

 

 

  Many years passed after that, and finally I had a chance! Of course, I jumped on⁴ it! It has been so much fun to have music around me.

 

 

  Thanks to my teacher, I joined a sax festival, made saxophone friends, had a chance to play as an ensemble member with big players like Masato Honda, Yasuto Tanaka, Toshiyuki Honda, and so on who were invited as guest players in the festivals.

 

 

  Last year, one of my saxophone friends invited me to join her big band. This became another phase⁵ of my music life. It is so much fun to make music together with other people. (I really enjoy the members, too!)

 
 

  After I joined the band, I started using a metal mouth piece, which I had never used before. That is also fun.

 
 

  Look! These are the 2 different kinds of mouth pieces : metal and rubber. As you might imagine, the character of the sounds that they make is really different.

  …. and we will perform 4 times in the coming 2 months. We seldom⁶ had a chance last year to play because of Covid 19, so we are excited to play on the stage. If you want to have some outing⁷ on the weekend and enjoy music, let’s enjoy music together in the open air⁸!

*The name of our band is the Mori Lemon-note Band.

私のサックスライフ

　今月末でテナーサックスを始めてからちょうど１６年が経ちます。私のサックスとの最初の出会いは、高校生の時に渡辺貞夫さんのライブに行ったことでした。演奏に魅了されて、この楽器を私もやりたいと思いました。でも、サックスを習うという私の夢は叶わず… (その時は！)

　長い年月が経ち、やっとチャンスが訪れました。もちろん、飛び付きました。それ以来、音楽に囲まれる生活を本当に楽しく送っています。

　私の先生のお陰で、サクソフォンフェスティバルにも出演させてもらい、そこでサックス繋がりの友人も出来、アンサンブルメンバーとしてフェスにゲスト出演した本田雅人さんや田中靖人さんや本多俊之さんなどのビッグプレイヤーと一緒に演奏する機会にも恵まれました。

　昨年は、サックスで繋がった友人の一人が彼女の所属するビッグバンドに混ざらないかと誘ってくれました。これが私のサックスライフがまた別な局面へと進むことになりました。他のメンバーと一緒に音楽を奏でるのは本当に楽しいです。（メンバーの人たちと一緒にいるのも楽しいです！）

　ビッグバンドに混ざってから、メタルのマウスピースを使い始めました。以前は使ったことがありません。これまた楽しいです。

　見てみてください。メタルとラバーの２つの異なったマウスピース。ご想像の如く、それらが作り出す音色はかなり違います。

ターシャはいつも私が写真を撮るとき現れます。

　…そして、これから２ヶ月の間で４回演奏します。去年はコロナのせいでほとんど演奏のチャンスがなかったので、みんなステージで演奏出来るのを楽しみにしています。もしも週末どこかに出掛けて音楽でも楽しみたいと思ったら、一緒に野外で音楽を楽しみましょう！
