Our Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving

Recently even in Japan we often hear the term1 Black Friday and many shops had Black Friday last week. Now we know that Black Friday means a big sale (which actually means the start of Xmas2 shopping). Do you know Black Friday starts right after Thanksgiving, which is on the 4th Thursday in November?

I will talk about our Thanksgiving this time. We don’t have a thanksgiving party at our house, where people often have turkey with cranberry sauce, but this year again we had a lot of things to be thankful3 for from our garden and the field which we borrow.

Thanks to Willl, we enjoyed home grown fruits and vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, rapsberries, lettuce, basil(Italian/Japanese/Aristotle), parsley and potatoes.

  Now, ta-da!

We are enjoying mandarin oranges4 from our garden. They are so precious5 because we had just 15.

A guy at the nursey said "Try not to have more than 10 because the tree is still tiny" when we bought it. We know that, but it was difficult to take some baby oranges off when we saw them. So we made them grow as they wanted.

Some are a little tangy6, but they are still good!

After the mandarin oranges, we are waiting for the fall potatoes which we planted in the summer. When they are ready, I want to have "Jacket Potatoes"(baked potatoes with the skin)  with butter or cream cheese. Yum yum7!!

*Jacket Potatoes — You wash the potatoes, bake them in the oven. Then, you open the top and put whatever you like inside. People see the potato skin as a jacket and call it this way. My father-in-law used to serve them. It’s very simple but so good! I like the name, too!

1 term = word
2
Xmas = Christmas
3 thankful :
4 mandarin oranges : みかん

5 precious
6 tangy :
◆7 yum yum :
8 father-in-law :
