Swan Report from Hirose River 2

Swan Report from Hirose River 2

It’s really interesting to see animals behaving just like people. While I was taking photos of swans, some started making noises and playing quite aggressively1 ( Maybe it was more like2 fighting ).

Then, some other swans swam close to them quickly as if they wanted to stop them, while some just kept watching from a distance3. ( I enlarged the photo so that you can see them closer. ) I was struck4 by this human-like behavior.

However, I was even more struck by their behavior when I showed the photos to Will when I came home.

I said "Isn’t this a good action shot of the swans?", showing the picture below. Will’s comment was VERY interesting.

"Do you know why they do this? This is how they shake off5 their stress."

I was very surprised. It’s true. After fighting(shown above), the swans swam apart and flapped6 their wings several times like this ( In fact, I took this photo, thinking they are doing something pretty ) :

Don’t you feel like you can understand their feelings now? The feeling that you want to let go of7 your strong emotion or stress somehow after being mad at something.

I respect them. Human beings sometimes escalate disagreement until the situation gets ugly. However, the swans stopped fighting after a few moments, individually let off steam8, and went back to normal9. They are great !

There are many things that human beings can learn from the animal world.

After seeing these photos, Will and I spread our arms and flapped them. We tried to feel what they feel.
It was quite nice !

We promised each other to flap our arms the next time10 we have a fight.
