Swan Report from Hirose River 1
This year, again, a group of swans are wintering1 on the Hirose River. Can you believe it ? Right in the city where there are many houses and many cars passing by2.
Knowing the ballet "Swan Lake" or the famous swamp3/lake, "Izunuma", ( registered in the Ramsar Convention ) near here where many winter birds spend the cold months, I thought that swans love somewhere calm and quiet surrounded by a natural environment4.
Anyway, this year there are 53 swans enjoying their lives in front of our house. Sometimes they gather in the river where I can see them just right out of the windows of my teaching room on the 2nd floor. They are really pretty and cute !
When Will, the birder of the family, found some swans wintering on the Hirose River 7 or 8 years ago, there were only 3. However, the next year, 5, and the year after that, 8. The number went up every year, and this year it reached 53.
They found this place "by quack of beak" ? Not "by word of mouth5."
Recently, I went out to the river and took some photos of our wonderful friends.

A synchronized swimming team with two newcomers — infant swans, once "Ugly Duckling"s, but now much too big to be mistaken for ducks.
Almost every night around midnight, they hang out in the river right in front of our house, honking8 and chattering. I always enjoy listening to their honking, wondering what they are doing late at night. ( They are night OWLs ! )
This is a very soothing9 moment at the end of the day . . .

3 伊豆沼は名前こそ沼ですが、英語でいうswampとはちょっと違います。pondにも少し近いかと思いますが、伊豆沼のサイズはpondと呼ぶには大きすぎ。訳すのが難しい名前です。（汗）
4 実はnatureだけではあまり使いません。
5 日本語の「口コミ」は、「マスコミ」をもじって作った言葉だそうです。he he he !!!
8 実は白鳥の鳴き声も表しにくいです。無難にcryを使うという手もあるのですが・・・

広瀬川白鳥リポート １
今年もまた、白鳥の一群が広瀬川で冬を越しています。信じられますか？たくさん家が立ち並び、たくさん車が行き交う街の真ん中で。
バレエの『白鳥の湖』や、冬鳥の飛来地として有名な『伊豆沼』（ラムサール条約に登録された）から想像して、私は、白鳥は自然環境に囲まれた穏やかで静かなところが好きなのだろうと思っていたのですが。
まあ、それはそれとして、今年は５３羽の白鳥たちが私たちの家の前で彼らの生活を楽しんでいます。ときどき２階の私の教室の窓から見えるすぐそこに集まります。その姿は本当に美しく、また可愛くもあります！
我が家のバーダーのウィルが７、８年前に広瀬川で白鳥が越冬しているのに気付いたときは、３羽のみ。ところが、次の年は５羽、その翌年は８羽というように、毎年数が増えて行きました。そして今年は５３羽。
「口コミ」ならぬ、「クチバシコミ」でやってきたのかな～？
最近、川へ降りて行って、素敵なお友達の写真を撮ってきました。

白鳥さんのポートレート。首が長いと傾げたクビが本当に傾いている～って感じ！＼(+0+)／ ほう！
新しい仲間が入ったシンクロチーム。前は『醜いアヒルの子』 だった幼鳥。でも、ここまで育てばアヒルに間違えられないほどの堂々たるサイズ。
ほぼ毎晩１２ごろ、白鳥たちは家の近くでいろんな鳴き声を出しながら“たむろしてます”。私はこんな夜遅くにみんな何をしてるのかな～と想像しながら、白鳥の鳴き声に耳を傾けています。（「本当はフクロウだったんだ！」*）
一日の終わりの心安らぐ時間です。。。
* 本当は「彼らは宵っ張りなのね！」の意味です。ｄ(^-^) 英語では宵っ張りをnight owlというのです。
