The Second Generation, the Third Generation, and Even More

The Second Generation, the Third Generation, and Even More

If you have been reading my blog for a while1, you might know that I’m a succulent2 lover. If you are my student, it’s obvious3! In my teaching room there are a lot. (I know I should organize4 them a bit more nicely.)

This time, I succeeded to5 grow the second generation of a succulent which is called Kinso Giku(琴爪菊). Last year I tried but I failed6, so I was doubtful if I could manage. However, I DID IT! I’m so happy.

Last year I cut 2 pieces of branches from the parent plant, dried the cut surfaces for a couple of days, and put them in soil7. About a week later, they started withering8. Pretty soon after that, they died. (- -;)

This year I tried another method. First, I put the cut brances in water for 2 weeks so that9 they can have enough water in them to live for a while. Then, I put them in soil, and I didn’t water them. They didn’t wither. That was a good sign. I waited for a week, then I saw a tiny root starting to come out at the bottom.

Then, I waited for another week and that tiny baby root turned into a monster root! Now no worries!

Actually, I had been wanting to give this to one of my students who plays the Japanese harp because this succulent’s name is Japanese harp pick10! Last Thursday, this Kinso Giku succulent finally went to its new home!

I also planted some of my other succulent babies quickly — before the rainy season comes. I have been taking care of some of them for more than a few years. Some are more than 10 years old. That is one of the fun things about taking care of plants.

Hope this nice weather will last a bit more so that they can grow healthily!

1 for a while : しばらくの間
2 a succulent :

3 obvious : 明白な
4 organize : ~

5 succeed to do : うまく~する

◆7 soil : 土 (=dirt)
8 wither :
◆9 so that ~ : だから~

suc(=under) + ceed(=go)
