Enjoying Life Inside

 

  In the cold winter we have to find something we can enjoy inside the house. Now we sometimes hear "Hygge" in Danish¹, meaning a nice and comfortable atmosphere or time. 

 

  My life is a bit far from² that kind of life, but my hygge is…

  taking care of the plants in my room quietly.

 

  I love having plants around me and I do have a lot. Right now outside is so cold, so I put a lot of plants from outside in my room. Especially at this time of the year, my room is like a nursery³.

 

  Here I will show you some cute and funny friends of mine:

 

  The first one is what I call "Kune kune-chan"⁴. As you can see in the photo, the stem goes zigzag as it grows. I found this at a home center and I fell in love with⁵ this funny shape and brought it home. Since then, maybe 10 years ago?, it never stops zigzaging!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  The next one is the one that came to my house last summer. The little kid bulbs⁶ on the mother plant are getting big slowly. I would like to separate them and plant them individually. I had a similar one before but when I separated them, the babies didn’t grow. Not only that, eventually⁷ they died. So right now I’m just enjoying them as they are.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  Since I have many different kinds of succulents⁸, cactuses and leafy plants, me and my students often talk about plants, and sometimes we even exchange plants. My students learn words like "annual", "perennial", "variegated", not to mention⁹ "succulents" which are all around us in our study room!

 

 

 

 

おうち時間を楽しむ

　寒～い冬は家の中で楽しめるものを見つけなければいけません。今では、ステキで快適な雰囲気や時間を意味するデンマーク語の「ヒュッゲ」という言葉も耳にするようになりました。

　私の生活はそんな生活からはちょっとほど遠いのですが、私のヒュッゲは…
部屋で静かに植物のお世話をすること。

　身の周りに植物があるのが好きで、本当にたくさん持っています。今は外がとても寒いので、外から部屋の中へたくさんの植物を取り込みました。特に一年の中でこの時期は、私の部屋は園芸店状態です。

　では、こちらに私の可愛い＆面白いお友達をご紹介しましょう：

　まずは、私が「クネクネさん」と呼んでいるもの。写真で見てお分かりのように、茎が成長しながらクネクネしていきます。ホームセンターで見つけて、すぐにこのちょっとおかしなフォルムに惚れ込んで、家に連れて帰りました。それ以来もう10年は経ちますかね～？今なおクネクネ頑張ってます！

　次は昨年の夏にうちに来た子。親木についたこの小さいこっこちゃんたちは本当に成長がゆっくり。こっこちゃんたちをはがして、それぞれ植えたいと思ったんです。前にも似たようなものを持っていたのですが、バラバラにしたらこっこちゃんが育ってくれませんでした。それだけじゃなく、だんだんに枯れてしまいました。だから今はそのままの状態で楽しんでいます。

　私がたくさんの違った種類の多肉植物やサボテンや、葉物を持っているので、私と習いに来る方たちはよく植物を話題にします。時には植物を交換したりもします。私の生徒の方は「一年草」「多年草」「斑入りの」なんていう言葉は知っています。「多肉植物」という言葉は言うまでもなく！勉強するお部屋に所狭しと並んでいますから。
