Life in the Hirose River at the End of the Year

 

  For the first time this season, I went down to the river recently to greet¹ our winter birds. For the last blog in 2023, I would like to share a fun nature talk in our city, Sendai.

 

  I approached them slowly and quietly. They are quite tame². They don’t swim away from me. From my room, I always see them, but of course they are reeeeally cute and pretty when I see them close in person³!

 

  Actually there are so many kinds of birds in the Hirose River. I’m not an expert but Will knows a lot. He says we can see 20-30 species⁴. (Without binoculars⁵ I can see about 10 usually, maybe.)

 

 

  First, the family of swans that I see from my room every day. They were my main reason for going to see birds down on the river this time. I wanted to see the 2 parents and 4 gray baby swans (You know they are called Ugly Ducklings in the book — of course not ugly at all!). I kept talking to the mom(?) because she was looking at me like this all the time.

   

　

 

 　

 

 

 

  Look at this! They have really giant feet! Judging from⁶ the shape of the yellow part on the beak⁷, they are O Hakucho. The bottom tip part is kind of sharp.

　

 

 

  Next, mallards. They really catch our eyes since they have such pretty colors. Because of the light, only two look like they have green heads, but actually the blackish heads in front of them are also very pretty green. They are so fashionable, huh?

 

 

  Still more to talk about, but it’s going to be long so maybe I’ll talk about them in the next blog. If you feel like enjoying your New Year’s holidays quietly and somewhere close, it’s not a bad idea to come down to the Hirose River. There are many swans near the Hirose Bridge (sometimes in the daytime they fly to the east to eat) and many more species if you walk toward the west from there. It’s really fun!

  I’ll just name them here : Spot-billed Ducks, Pochard, Pintail, Tufted Duck, Common Merganser, Little Grebe, Green-winged Teal, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Little Egret, Great Egret, Gray Heron.

年の瀬の広瀬川

　最近、この冬初めて冬鳥たちに挨拶するために広瀬川に降りて来ました。２０２３年の最後のブログは私たちの街仙台の楽しい自然の話をお届けしたいと思います。

　ゆっくりと靜かに近づいて行きました。鳥たちはかなり人に慣れています。逃げて行こうとはしません。私の部屋からいつも鳥たちを見ていますが、やっぱり近くで実際に見ると、と～っても可愛くて美しいです。

　広瀬川には本当にたくさんの鳥がいます。私は専門家じゃないですが、ウィルはたくさん知っています。２０～３０種類ぐらい見れると言っています。（双眼鏡なしで、私は多分１０種類ぐらいは分かります。）

　まずは、毎日部屋から観察している白鳥の家族。今回川に降りて一番観て来たかったのは、実は彼ら。２羽の親鳥と４羽のグレーの子ども（本ではみにくいあひるの子と呼ばれている子たち。もちろん、全然みにくくありませんが…）を見たかったんです。お母さん(？)がずっとこんな風に私のことを見つめ続けるものですから、ずっと私も話し続けました。

　見てください！白鳥の足ってこんなに大きいんですよ！くちばしの黄色い部分の形から判断して、この白鳥たちはオオハクチョウ。黄色の部分の先端がシャープなのが特徴です。

　次はマガモ。すごく素敵な色合いをしているので、人目を惹きます。光のせいで、２羽だけが頭が緑に見えますが、実は前方にいる黒っぽい頭のカモもとてもキレイな緑色をしています。オシャレさんですよね！

　まだまだお話し出来るのですが、長くなってしまうので次のブログでお話しすることにしましょう。このお正月休みを静かに近場で楽しみたいなぁなんて思っていらっしゃったら、広瀬川に来てみるのも悪くはないですよ。広瀬橋の近くにはたくさんの白鳥がいます。そして、そこから西に向かって歩いていくとさらにもっとたくさんの種類の鳥が見れます。本当に楽しいですよ！

こちらに名前だけ載せておきます：カルガモ、ホシハジロ、オナガガモ、キンクロハジロ、カワアイサ、カイツブリ、コガモ、オオバン、ユリカモメ、コサギ、ダイサギ、アオサギ。
