◆Bird Tour

Bird Tour

  Recently, one of Will’s students asked Will to take her and her husband and their friends out to the Hirose River for a bird tour. Oh, Will was really happy about that.

  He made a handout1 so that each person would have a bird guide in their hands2, and off he went3.

  They saw 27 species, just walking around the Hirose River. I was also invited, but I had so many things to do, including preparing to file our taxes4, so I just joined them for lunch after the tour.

   Will’s student also lives near the river, so I’m sure that it was fun to see all those birds through a birder’s eyes.

  Today, when I came back home along the river, I saw swans moving in a group. I’m such a beginner, but I tried to look closely at the beaks5 to see if they were Whooper Swans or Whistling Swans. I couldn’t really tell, but it’s fun to be aware of6 the differences in the patterns of beaks and the colors of feet because I feel like I’m getting close to being a birder. (way far7, though f(^-^;) )

  Here’s one bit of trivia8 which I learned from Will. Yurikamome, many of whom spend the winter near our house, have a white head — which most people probably know. However, did you know that their heads turn all black9 in the summer? They look totally different. Please check it on the Internet! — black-headed gull in summer plumage10. In English, it’s obvious!

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 今日、川の横を通って帰って来た時、白鳥が群れで川を泳いでいくのを見ました。まだまだ初心者の私ですが、オオハクチョウかコハクチョウか目を凝らして口ばしを見てみました。よく見えませんでしが、それでも、口ばしの模様や足の色の違いを気にしながら鳥を観るようになるのは楽しいことです。バードウォッチャーに近づいて来ているような気がします。(まだまだ遠いですけど f(^-^;) )
 ここで、ちょっと豆知識。こちらも前にウィルから教えてもらったんですよ。ユリカモメ — 私たちの家の近くでもたくさんのユリカモメたちが冬を越すのですが、多くの人が知っているように白い頭をしています。ところが、夏になると頭が全部真っ黒になるってご存じでしたか?まるで別人。(別鳥?)是非ネットで検索してみてください!— 夏羽 ユリカモメと入れて。英語ではそのまんまですが・・・
