My First Jazz Festival

 
  

 

  When we got married, in our apartment we had a poster of the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival poster on the wall. The very left one in the photo — a gray silhouette¹ of a jazz man playing the piano against a white background with the title in orange². I don’t know where he got it, but it was simple and very cool³. It was for the 3rd year of the festival. I remember that on Sundy afternoon we walked along Jozenji Street and enjoyed the music. There were only 67 bands playing that year.

 

 

 

  29 years after that, I was playing in the festival. Very luckily, our band passed the screening⁴ (we submit performance videos) and was able to play at the Jazz Festival. I started the saxophone at the age of⁵ 40 and I’m still taking lessons! When I was seeing the poster in my apartment, I never dreamt⁶ that I would be performing in the festival.

 

 

 

  I was reeeally lucky that my friend contacted my and invited me to join the band about one and a half years ago. At that time, I had to learn 6 pieces for a performance which was coming in a month. I was desperate⁷(!) but it was fun!  

 

 

  Of course, it’s fun to play for the audience, but it’s fun to get together with⁸ other members and practice, too. We gather 2 times a month on Sundays and practice for 3 hours. Now I only have 2 free Sundays a month (since I work on Saturdays) so I’m super busy, but I don’t want to skip the practice because it’s fun to see the other members and play as one⁹.

 

 

 

  We are like a big family —  from the young¹⁰ to the "life-experienced" (I belong to the latter group — lol !) and I have made many good friends¹¹ there.

初めてのジャズフェス

　結婚した当初、私たちのアパートの壁にはジャズフェスのポスターが貼ってありました。写真の一番左のもの、  白の背景にグレーのジャズマンがピアノを弾く姿が描かれていて、オレンジで文字が入っているポスターです。どこで手に入れたのかは知りませんが、シンプルで格好いいものでした。それがジャスフェス第３回のもの。日曜日の午後定禅寺通りを二人で歩いて、音楽を楽しんだのを覚えています。その年は６７団体しか出ていませんでした。

　それから２９年経って、ジャスフェスで演奏しました。運よく私たちのバンドは審査を通り（演奏の動画を提出するんですよ）、演奏できることになりました。私は４０歳でサックスを始め、今もレッスンを続けています。家でポスターを眺めていた時、ジャズフェスで演奏することになろうとは想像もしませんでした。

　友人が約１年半前、連絡をくれてバンドに誘ってくれたんです。本当にラッキーだったと思います。その時は１ヵ月後に迫った演奏に向けて６曲マスターしなければならず必死でした。でも楽しかった！

　もちろん、聴く方たちの前で演奏を披露するのも楽しいのですが、他のメンバーと集まって練習をするのもとても楽しいです。月に２回日曜日に集まり、３時間練習します。私はひと月に自由になる日曜日が２日のみ（土曜日は仕事をしています）、だから結構忙しいのですが、かと言って練習を休みたいとは思いません。メンバーと会って、みんな一つになって音楽を奏でるのはたまりません。

　私たちのビッグバンドは一つの大家族のようです — 若い人から"人生経験の長い"人まで。私も後者に入ります（笑）、そこでたくさんの良い友人が出来ました。
