We had guests!
 

    

  Last week, we had guests — Will’s cousin and her friend! They came from San Francisco. The first time (and the last time probably) I met Will’s cousin was just before we got married when Will’s parents had a home party for our wedding, so it was a long long time ago.

 

 

  After the pandemic¹, no one was able to travel. So it was fun to put somebody up² at home. They were the travelers, but I also felt like I was on a trip³.

 

 

  They wanted to go to the Wind Phone in Otsuchi, Iwate. Will’s cousin’s friend, a Japanese-American,  said she saw a TV program about the Wind Phone on NHK in the U.S.⁴ and after that some American programs also featured⁵ the Wind Phone. So they decided to come all this way!

 

 

 

  Of course, it is quite a long trip from the states⁶, but it is also quite a long way from Sendai to Otsuchi. They had to take the Tohoku Super Express, the Kama-ishi Line and the Sanriku Railway.

 
 

  About a week before they came, I happened to⁷ find out⁸ that the Kama-ishi Line would be closed in the daytime for 3 days for repair — just when they wanted to head for⁹ Otsuchi! I was panicked because their main purpose¹⁰ to come to Japan was to go there and because of their tight schedule they couldn’t change the date.

 
 

  However, thanks to my old student’s help (who lives in Hanamaki) and after spending quite a few hours to make an alternative¹¹ plan, we figured out¹² the way to avoid¹³ the problem and they made it¹⁴!! That was a relief¹⁵!

お客さんが来ました！

　先週、お客さんが来ました — と言ってもウィルの従妹とその友だち。サンフランシスコからやって来ました。私がウィルの従妹に初めて(そして恐らく最後に)出会ったのは、結婚する直前、ウィルの両親が結婚を祝ってホームパーティをしてくれた時でした。とってもとっても昔のことです。

　コロナの流行後、旅行が困難になりましたから、こうやって久々に家に誰かを泊めてあげられるのは楽しかったです。彼女たちが旅をしていたのですが、自分も旅をしているように感じました。

　２人は岩手県の大槌にある「風の電話」に行きたかったんです。ウィルの従妹のお友達、彼女は日系アメリカ人なのですが、アメリカでＮＨＫで「風の電話」の番組を見て、そのあとでアメリカの番組でも「風の電話」を取り上げていて、それでこちらまでわざわざ来ることにしたんだそうです。

　もちろん、アメリカからやって来るのは長い旅ですが、仙台から大槌に行くのもなかなか遠い道のりです。東北新幹線→釜石線→三陸鉄道と乗り継いで行きます。

　２人が来る約１週間前に、釜石線が３日間修繕のため止まるということをたまたま知りました。それも、２人がちょうど大槌に向かう時！日本に来る１番の目的がそこに行くことだし、日程が詰まっていて他の日に変更できないので、私はパニクりました。

　でも、昔の学生（花巻在住）の手助けのお陰と、代替え案を作るためかなりの時間を費やした末に、その問題を避ける方法をひねり出して２人は無事に行くことが出来ました！！ホッ！
