Young Birds

 　                    
  It’s interesting that kids look like kids in any species¹, not just human beings’ children, but kittens, puppies and any other animal. Somehow they have some sign of innocence² and there is something about them that makes them look cute, and the same is true for birds. Something can tell us that they are kids.

  For example, look at this kid:

  I’m not sure if this comes up clearly on the blog screen, but if you look  closely, you can tell it has kid-like fuzzy³ wings.

   Here’s another kid:

  He’s got to⁴ learn how to comb his hair.

  Do you want to see what they look like when they grow up?   The first one is a White Wagtail, Seikirei in Japanese.

They are called that because they wag their tails⁵ up and down all the time. ( Dogs aren’t the only things that wag their tails. When I get really happy, Will says "Oh, you’re wagging your tail." I didn’t know I had a tail….)

 The next one is a Black-crowned Night Heron.  This is a bird which has been on the blog a few⁶ times because I like them so much.

 So these are the grown-ups⁷.
 

***Here’s some trivia⁸ at the end. The Wagtails are permanent residents⁹, meaning they are here all year, but  the Night Herons are only summer visitors. (Though sometimes juviniles¹⁰ spend the winter here.)

まだ若い鳥

　人間の子どもも、子猫、子犬、他の動物も、生き物の種を問わず子どもが子どもらしく見えるって不思議ですよね。どこか無垢な感じと可愛らしい感じを必ず持っていますよね。鳥もそうです。どこか子どもらしい雰囲気が出ているんですよ。

　たとえば、この子。

　ちょっと写真が鮮明ではないかも知れませんが、よく見ると、幼鳥らしいふわふわした羽に気付きますよね。

　そして、こちらの子も。　

　この子は、頭をとかすこともまだ身に付いていません・・・

　この子たちが成長した末の大人の姿はといいますと・・・。一つめが、白セキレイ。

　常に尾を上下に振っているのでそう(wagtail=尾を振る)呼ばれています。（しっぽを振るのは犬だけではないんですね。私がとても嬉しそうにするとき、ウィルは私に向かって「あ～、しっぽ振ってるね～。」といいます。私しっぽがついてたなんて知らなかった…）

　次はゴイサギ。私のお気に入りなので、ブログには何回か登場した鳥です。

　という訳で、こちらが大人たちでした。

***最後に豆知識をちょっと。セキレイは永住者、すなわち一年を通してこの辺に住んでいるのですが、ゴイサギは夏しか会えません。（時々幼鳥が冬を過ごしていることもありますが）
