The Fox Village
I heard about a fox village from two of my students a while ago1. This Sunday, we planned to have a family outing2, and our family and my mom visited the Fox Village and Shiroishi Castle.
I have never seen foxes this close, so it was really fun to see them walking near us or sleeping right in front of us.
There was a feeding station3, and of course the foxes gathered together making sounds whenever somebody was coming with food.
We heard that nowadays it’s a popular spot for foreigners. When we were there, we saw some Chinese and French people.
When we visit this kind of place where animals are kept in captivity4, like a zoo, we always have mixed feelings. They are not free, but they are always fed5, they don’t have to hunt, when they get sick6, a vet sees them and all their problems are taken care of. There are some benefits for animals, I hope.
On the way back7 from there, we quickly dropped by8 Shiroishi Castle and enjoyed the cherry blossoms9. It took only about 1 hour to get there from Sendai, including 40 mins on the highway. It was a really nice, not tiring, good length day out10 for a change!

キツネ村
しばらく前に、習いにいらしている方お二人から、キツネ村について聞いていたんです。この日曜日、家族でどこかへ出掛けようと計画していたのですが、私たち家族と母とでそのキツネ村と白石城へ行って来ました。
こんなに近い距離でキツネを見たことがなかったので、キツネが私たちの近くを歩いて行ったり、目の前で寝ている姿を見るのはとても楽しかったですよ！
餌をあげる場所があり、誰かが餌を持って現れると、もちろんキツネ達が声をあげて集まって来たりして・・・
外国人にも人気の場所だと聞いていましたが、私たちが行った時も中国人とフランス人が来ていました。
動物園など、動物が捕獲飼育されている所に行くと、いつもちょっと微妙な気持ちになっちゃうんです。自由ではないので。でも、いつも食べ物を与えられて、狩りをする必要がないし、病気になれば、獣医さんに診てもらえて問題は対処されるし、動物もそれなりの利益を得ている・・・んでしょうね。
帰りに、白石城に立ち寄って桜も満喫して帰ってました。仙台から、高速の４０分も含めて、ほんの１時間。気分転換に、丁度良く、疲れず、いいあんばいの長さのお出掛けになりました。
