  I haven’t written about Halloween pumpkins this year, but of course as usual my pumpkin guy has been working on¹ them since Golden Week.

 

  He started by putting seeds in water, then moved them to pots, and then planting them in the real soil². Some are in front of our house, and some went to the field he borrows.

 

  As usual there was some drama³. Some didn’t have flowers. Some had baby pumpkins but they died before they got bigger. In the end, by mid August we had several pumpkins waiting to be jack-o’-lanterns.

 

  This is our pumpkin patch⁴. 

 

  It’s fun to have several varieties!

 

 

 

 

  After Obon we brought 3 pumpkins home from the field. Of course we want to keep them in the field until the last moment — we don’t need them until the end of October — but we saw some rot⁵ starting so we decided to take them in. Will treats them by drying the stems with a hair dryer.

 

  I hope they will survive until Halloween!!

 

 

 

 

  p.s. Speaking of⁷ pumpkins, in the photo album on my smartphone, just next to these pumpkin photos, I also had pumpkin-like⁸ thingies⁹. These are not white pumpkins. They are astronomical telescopes in Hawaii. (I was watching their live stream from Hawaii for a few nights to see the Perseids Meteor shower because in Japan we had rainy days and we couldn’t see the shooting stars¹⁰. I saw more than 50 in total! Can you see one shooting star in the middle? )
