Banding (by Will)

 

  My bird-bander friend (he’s a good bass player, too) has moved his banding spot to a place that’s much closer to our house and that means I can visit much more often. The other day I joined him on a sunny, clear-skied morning¹ just before 6:00am. This is the passerine migration², and there were many birds — it was like apple picking!

Here is a Black-faced Bunting (アオジ) that is ready to be picked.

 

After the birds are taken out of the nets, they are put into cloth bags to wait for their turn³. They will be examined⁴ and the information logged⁵. Then a band is put on the bird’s leg, and it is released.

It’s really fun to see these birds in the hand. There’s no other way to get such a close-up view! And the information gathered helps us to know the birds movements and behavior⁶ and will help in their preservation and protection for generations to come⁷.

 

 

Here are 2 Bush Warblers (ウグイス) in the hand. When you see them so close, you can see that the male is larger than the female — something that’s difficult to see in the wild⁸.

I hope to get out to watch the banding again soon.

(Everybody should know that catching wild birds (without a license) in Japan is illegal⁹! The bird banders have studied hard for the license, and the nets have official Japanese government signs at each end. If you ever see nets that don’t have these signs, call the police — those nets are used by unscrupulous¹⁰ people and the birds are probably destined for¹¹ the dinner table…)

バンディング(標識付け）　

　僕の鳥のバンダーである友人（ベースギターも上手いんです）は、調査ステーションを僕の家の近くに移したので、ちょくちょく彼のいる場所を訪ねることが出来るようになりました。先日、太陽が出て雲一つない朝、６時前に彼のところに行って来ました。今はスズメ目の鳥が飛来する時。行ってみると、まるでリンゴ狩りでもするかのように、沢山の鳥たちがかすみ網に引っ掛かっていました。

　こちらが、網から外してもらう直前のアオジ。

　網から外してもらうと、布製の袋に入って、自分の順番を待ちます。調査されて、情報が記録されます。それから、足に標識が付けられ放たれます。

　これが、車の後ろで袋に入って調査の順番待ちをする鳥たち。（Rie—こういう狭い空間に入れられて周りが見えないと、おとなしくしているそうですよ！）

　手の中で鳥を観察するのは、本当に楽しいです。こんな近くで鳥を観ることなんて他にないですから！このようにして集められた情報は、鳥の移動経路や行動を知るのに役立ちます。また、将来の鳥の維持や保護に役立てられます。

　こちらは、手の中に収まるウグイス。（Rie—カワイイ～(^0^) たまらない！）これだけ近くで見ると、メスよりもオスが大きいのが分かります — 自然の中でこの違いを見るのは大変です。

　また近々バンディングの様子を見に出掛けたいと思います。

　（日本では、野生の鳥を免許なくして捕獲するのは法律違反です!! 鳥の標識調査員は免許取得のために猛勉強し、調査員のかすみ網の端には、日本政府の公式のマークが付いています。もし、それらの政府のサインが付いていない網を見た場合は、警察に通報しましょう。— マークの入っていない網を使っているのは節度のない人たち。そして、鳥たちはそういう人たちの食卓に上る運命になるのです・・・）
