Having a Pyramid at Home
The other day, one of my students gave this to me as a souvenir1. Of course, as you can see, she went to Egypt — Wow!
She said she had a wonderful time there and told me many interesting stories that she experienced. I want to go there some day, too. Especially, Will always says, "I’ve gotta go there" everytime2 he sees some TV shows about Egypt.
(Since we went backpacking3 around the world for a year 20 years ago, we haven’t been anywhere other than the states to see his family…)
… and, speaking of Egypt, at the end of the year, I saw on the news that they may have found the tomb4 of an important queen — Nefertiti. Modern technologies can reveal5 a lot of interesting things about ancient6 times. It is cool!
Just looking at the box of this souvenir, I felt how beautiful this shape is. (Of course, I want to see the real one.) Actually, she said I chose this because this shape grabbed me. It’s interesting that we don’t necessarily7 need frilly8 decorative things to find beauty. Just a simple thing can do.
Besides9 enjoying the design of this box, we, of course, enjoyed the inside, which was dates10 — the fruits of the palm tree.

家にピラミッドがやって来た！
先日、英語を勉強しにいらしている方から、こちらをお土産に頂きました。ご覧になって分かるように、エジプトへ行って来たんですって。— ワオ！
素晴らしいかったと言って、たくさんの面白い体験話をしてくれました。私もいつか行きたいなぁ。ウィルも、テレビで何かエジプトのことを見る度に「僕も行かなくちゃ！」と言っています。
（２０年前に１年間バックパックで世界を回って以来、家族に会いにアメリカに行く以外どこにも行っていない…）
そして、エジプトと言えば、年末頃重要な女王ネフェルティティのものと思われる墓が見つかったのではないかとニュースで報じていましたね。近代の技術で古代の多くの興味深いものが見つけ出されていくんですね。スゴイ！
このお土産の箱を見て、何て素敵な形をしているんだろうなと思いました。（もちろん、本物を見て感じたいと思いますが。）これをくださった方も、形に惹かれて買ったと話していました。面白いですね、美しさを感じるって必ずしも装飾がたくさんなされている物じゃなくていいんですよね。シンプルなもので十分。
この箱のデザインもですが、もちろん中身—ヤシの木になる実、ナツメヤシ—もしっかり楽しませて頂きました。
