Swans Arrived!
On the 14 of this month, the first bunch of1 swans came to the Hirose River. I had already heard that some had come to Sendai — Will said he saw some in the swamps2 when he went out for bird watching. One of my students also said she glimpsed3 some swans flying over the neighborhood. So we were waiting for some to show up here, too. … and finally they came!
Interestingly, according to Will’s bird journal, they arrived on the same4 day as last year. Their time is punctual5, huh?
Of course, people living right at the Hirose River passed around6 this news quickly. I’ve been wanting to see and welcome them in person7. Finally, I had a chance to go out and see them. Look!
The reflection of the red bridge made a red carpet8 for them.

…and just yesterday, we were driving near Izunuma, the place where water birds pass the winter. We saw many many groups of swans and geese enjoying their meal time in the rice fields.(Personally, I think swans give me a more impressive picture of themselves when they are in the water. (^-^;) )
The scale of birds in that area is, of course, totally different from that of what we enjoy here. In the late afternonn, when we were coming back, the sky had many black dots, like somebody had sprinkled Gomashio in the air. Swans and geese were going home, too.

白鳥が来ました！
今月１４日に、今シーズン最初の白鳥が広瀬川にやって来ました。すでに仙台に飛んできているのは耳にしていました。— ウィルがバードウォッチングに行ったときに何羽か見たと話していましたし、私の生徒の方も、空を飛んでいくのを見たと言っていました。それで、私たちもいつ白鳥がここに現れるかと心待ちにしていました。・・・そして、とうとう来てくれました！
面白いことに、ウィルの鳥日記によると、去年も同じ日にやって来たということです。白鳥さんの時間は正確ですね。
もちろん、広瀬川の付近に住んでいる人たちはこの情報をすぐ伝えあいました。私もこの目で見てお迎えしたいと思っていて、やっと白鳥のいるところまで近づいて会って来ました。ご覧ください！

・・・そして、ちょうど昨日、伊豆沼の近くを車で通りました。伊豆沼は冬鳥が越冬するところ。本当にたくさんの白鳥や雁の群れが田んぼでお食事を楽しんでいました。（個人的には、水辺にいる方が白鳥は絵的にステキと思うのですが…(^-^;) 人間の勝手な感想 ）
当たり前ですが、伊豆沼付近の鳥のスケールは、この辺で私たちが楽しんでいるものとは比べものにもなりません。夕方、家路に着いたとき、空がゴマ塩をふりかけたように、黒い点でいっぱいでした。白鳥や雁も家に帰っているところでした。
